Student Management

How to add a student to the program

  1. Click on the 3 lines > Student Setup

      1. Enter in the student’s first and last names.

      2. Choose the appropriate grade level and the school that the student attends.

      3. In the student User ID, enter in the student’s login

      4. Enter in a password - minimum of 3 characters that the student will use along with the user ID to login.

      5. Choose Yes for liscense this student and then choose yourself or a collague for lead teacher.

      6. Choose which program(s) the student should have access to. Unchecking a program means no access.

        1. By default, Read Naturally Live is checked for the student. Other programs are optional depending on student needs.

      7. Optionally, if the student requires accessibility options you can also enable them here (or turn off if no longer necessary).

      8. Skip Contact 1 and 2 information.

    2. Hit Save and close or Save & add another to add another student.

Assigning Liscenses to Multiple Students

If the student already exsists within the platform, there’s no need to re-create the student, but rather assign a liscense to the student. (Note: Each school year, the liscenses are removed from the students as part of the promotion process).

  1. Log into the application.

  2. Click on Student Setup button

  4. Choose the school, if you’re at multiple schools.

  5. You can choose multiple students or a single student.
    When assigning multiple students a liscense, you’ll also want to make sure that the students will all share the same lead teacher.

    1. For Multiple students: Select the first student in the list that you want to assign a liscense to. Hold the shift button your keyboard, and then select the bottom student.

    2. Click on the “Manage Access to Read Live” button.

    3. Click on the “Add liscenses for selected” button. to add a liscense.

    4. Then select a lead teacher for all these students.

  5. To assign an individual student to a liscense, from this screen, you can click on the student’s last name and it’ll pop open the edit menu as if you were creating the student.

    1. Update the “Liscense this student” dropdown to “Yes” and update the lead teacher with your name.

    2. You can also optionally assign additional programs from this screen.

    3. Hit Save and close when done to return to the application access screen.

Read Naturally Live - Working with Students

Conduct Teacher-Led Placement

To assess the student’s level, a teacher-led placement test is done where the student is going to be reading the passage outloud with the teacher sitting next to the student, from the teachers' computer. As the student is reading words, then you, the teacher, will want to keep track of the number of words missed. After 1 minute, there will be a bell that sounds, then the teacher will click on the

  1. Log into the portal.

  2. Click on Student Activity.

This screen, will show you all the students who are liscensed within the platform and by default limits it down to those students who are assigned to you. You can click on the carrot (>) to the left of the student name to see which applications the student is liscensed to.

  1. Expand out the student’s information and then click on the “placement” button.

  2. Select the approximate level to begin testing the student. You can also click on the “i” to see more information about the level and test information.

  3. Click Next.

  4. At this point, you’ll want to click “start timing” and have the student start reading. (Alternatively, you can have the student start reading and once you hear the first word, then you hit the start timing button.).

  5. After 1 minute, a bell will sound and then as the teacher, click on the last word that the student read, and then enter in the number of missed words.

  6. Click on Next.

  7. The next screen shows you the results.

    1. In this example, we can either re-test the student if the level was too hard or too easy for the student OR stop testing the student and choose the appropriate level.

    2. If you choose “Contuine testing”, it’ll send you back to the first placement screen where you can choose another level and re-do the 1 minute testing.

    3. If you choose “stop testing and pick a level”, then you’ll want to select one of the options for the series/level and goal for the student.

  8. The next screen will ask you to confirm your selection and then also show you the most recent placement test results found under the “Student Placement Report”.

Conduct Student Placememnt

  1. Have the student log into the student platform using their userid and password that you created.

    1. Can’t remember the username and password combination? Run the report

  2. Click on the tile of conduct placement.

  3. Choose the tile of “No, I am working by myself”. (If a student chooses Teacher is with me, it’ll ask the teacher to log in and then go through the steps of teacher led placement steps).

  4. Before the student does anything else, you’ll want to watch the video that appears as it’ll show the student how to navigate around on the page. They can re-watch the video by clicking on the video icon with the question mark in the bottom left hand side.

  5. Click on start timing and begin reading outloud for 1 minute.

    1. TIP: Advise that the student should read OUTLOUD and CLEARLY.

  6. When the bell sounds, the student will click on the last word that they read.

    1. You might need to wait a few minutes for it to show up. If the level was too easy, then it’ll ask them to re-try another story to get a better idea where to place. Rinse and repeat until it says that there’s a level and story goal that seems like a good fit for the student.

  7. Click next.

  8. The screen now shows the list of stories that are within the student’s level and they can begin working.
