Classroom Communication Application Consolidation Project

Recommendation:

The team has recommended the adoption of Seesaw for all Kindergarten - 2nd Grade teachers as the official classroom communication application.

Background:

The usage of multiple communication apps that do the same thing has become complicated, and confusing  for Kindergarten - 2nd Grade parents.., If I have multiple children, I could be asked to go to Remind, Dojo and Seesaw for my three children for both in-class normal communication and remote learning. This also doesn't account for fine arts, or students in other grade levels.

Process:

A team of teachers helped evaluate the major players in the app communication space. We looked at criteria such as engaging parents, in-class instruction, remote instruction and how easily it could be adopted by all teachers from Kindergarten - 2nd Grade.

2019-2020 Classroom App Usage Results PK-2

Making a Data Driven Decision:

Assembled a team of teachers from PK-2 who already use the communication apps we evaluated. Each teacher evaluated the pro/con's of all three applications. Many teachers already have experience using these apps both from a teacher and/or student perspective.

Options Considered:

Option 1: No ChangeOption 2: SeesawOption 3:

Risks

Don't help parents with multiple kids, essentially not "learning anything" on consolidating platforms from our remote instruction Q4 of 2019-2020.Classdojo users will not be happy – without a digital behavior mgmt system of some sort. While this product does in theory combine Seesaw & Dojo, no one seemed impressed with its workflow and found things confusing.

FAQ:

  • Q1. Why isn't Dojo a strong candidate, I love it?
    • A1. Dojo doesn't have a district version, and there aren't any sales people to really talk to. It's basically just use it or don't mode.
  • Q2: I thought Pre-K was in this as well?
    • Pre-K helped evaluate the classroom apps. The decision on if MPC will join in on the same communication app as K-2 has not been decided. After some further investigation, they have different needs and expectations than even Kindergarten.
  • Q3: Why not grade 3-4?
    • Graders 3+ will be encouraged to use Schoology / Google  Classroom, and there is a cost factor for the "professional" version of these classroom apps.
  • Q4: I'd like to see people's responses to forms and thoughts
    • Links to form results will be in the reference section (see bottom).
  • Q5: How will Seesaw be rolled out?
    • We will be offering remote PD over the summer, both from Seesaw itself and from our local Seesaw experts. More details to come after finalization. All remote training sessions will be recorded in case you can't attend. See the Teacher Training plan section for more details.
  • Q6: I'm a second grade teacher, I think one iPad in every room would make using Seesaw really useful to take quick pictures /videos.
    • All second grade classrooms  will be issued 1 iPad to utilize Seesaw as the teacher see's fit. Chromebooks will remain as the primary student device in the classroom, but keep in mind, each K4 building has "check out iPads" that could also be leveraged for large Seesaw activity days.
  • Q7: What if SeeSaw doesn't work?
    • We are purposefully signing a 1 year contract with Seesaw and will collect feedback all year and re-evaluate options in the Spring.
  • Q8: Did you look at remind?
    • Yes we evaluated Remind, and while a useful tool to communicate, did not provide much assistance with in-class or remote learning at K-2 levels.
  • Q9: What about K-4 Fine Arts?
    • K-4 Fine art teachers will be issued an ipad to aide in the use of Seesaw.
  • Q10: I don't have an ipad now, but am slated to be issued one. Can I get it prior to training?
    • Yes. We will have them available for you, for pick up at your building prior to the training. Suspect end of July. Check with your building technician for details as the time gets closer.

As a teacher, reasons why Seesaw will be a difference maker at K-2:

(highlights from teacher form responses)

Helps me Engage Parents

Communication- can send family announcements and attach files, permission forms Can have one and two way communication and show read receipts

Has auto translation to Spanish and from Spanish to English (back to teacher).

Parents with multiple K-2 children can easily navigate between students.

Allowing parents to see student's work in progress by having them complete classroom activities.

Using this app lets parents see what their child is doing all day and feel like they are also apart of the classroom.

How it can be used during a normal in-class instructional day

Children attempting to post their own classroom work via their individual sign in qr codes. Attempting to complete activities via classroom ipads during literacy and math centers/small groups.

I can assign certain activities for students and then they would be able to work on them during MATH or READ centers independently.

Assigning students differentiated assignments to be completed during center time. Selecting their own work they want to record to share with families.

Each student would have a portfolio so it could be used for assessments in the fine arts setting. It would also allow for “drafts” so if a student doesn’t finish in the 30 min class period, it could be picked up the next class in the same place.

Students sharing their work with parents, or using the app to record their thinking, alone, or with a partner.

Teachers can assign assessments that normally would need to be done one on one, aides and co-teachers can be added to class to view and add to as a teacher.

Aides, co-teachers, and classroom teachers can collaborate and leave private notes on student assignments, the student journal page can show student progress, activities/assignments can be saved and organized to skill files, the activities/lessons teachers create can be saved and used for later use in the year or year after year, student files move with them from grade level to grade level.

How Seesaw can be used via remote instruction

Uploading activities to the app homepage for students to complete digitally. I can make my own or use the Library of already created ones. I can share the things that I make with my coworkers as well. I will take videos teaching concepts and upload them to the homepage or attached to an activity. Students can upload pictures of what they are doing while at home learning.

Students would submit work via this app. I could respond with feedback and ask students to add more and return it.

I would be able to easily assign certain assignments to students through this app via remote learning. It would be the one place that parents look to find all of their work. They would be able to complete them right then and there on the app. All of these activities will be saved in my library so I could easily access them for the next year.

Could attach docs that have links, docs they can write on and complete, attach voice recordings to explain directions, add videos or video recordings.

Seesaw is a one stop shop with remote learning. It is easy to post the agenda, link video clips of myself teaching or other videos, and the activities for students to complete at ease. This app makes it easy for myself to check student learning and comment/reteach. I love the send back feature if a student needs to make corrections after reteaching.

You can click the assignment to see who has not completed yet easily.

Parents are able to communicate with you and see what their child is turning in (not turning in). I found it easy to send announcements to parents/students or just parents.

Seesaw will be easily picked up by colleagues because

It is super user friendly, activities can be shared among coworkers so easily.

The support of others familiar with the app in the building as well as the support the Seesaw offer within the app.

I believe that there are enough people in the district that can offer help with the app if and when we would run into some struggles.

Seesaw has great help tab in which you can type in key words and it pulls up step by step directions to assist, they have great teacher resource page with webinars, video tutorials very similar to what our tech department put together for our staff, and resources and tips to assist parents on their end teachers can share with parents, the slides, pdfs and documents the teacher already use can be used/downloaded into seesaw simply by attaching, there is an activity library to search for skills taught in the classroom that can easily be assigned or even tweaked if needed so they would not have to start from scratch

If I can pick it up, anyone can!

While Seesaw is recommended, it doesn't do:

Behavior tracking like Dojo.

  •  Currently looking at alternative ideas for Dojo
  • For big Dojo users, it is okay to use it for internal tracking or perhaps a behavior RTI plan with select student(s).

Follow-up action items:

  • Aaron Souza  Put paperwork in to purchase SeeSaw
  • Aaron Souza Identify teacher leaders at each elementary building to serve as quick points of contact on Seesaw.
  •  Aaron Souza Coordinate final PD Opportunities with 201 teachers and SeeSaw options.
