Recommendations

3rd and 4th grade are a lock in terms of teacher agreement on 1:1 and Chromebooks. ~90%

2nd Grade is supportive but we would have to invest in more PD vs. 3rd & 4th. ~60%  (Most maybe/unsure coming from Jones, and only 1 MES teacher responded from 2nd grade).

1st Grade is supportive in 1:1, but would make more sense from an education perspective to be ipads.

If Kindergarten goes 1:1, the device should be an iPad. However, not all Kindergarten is on board with 1:1 (especially since we asked their input if they had Chromebooks). ~52%

Contributors

  • Media Class Teachers believe 1st graders are ready for Chromebooks in the homeroom.
  • Need to reach out to other teachers, specifically K-1.

Project Background

Exploring going 1:1 for K-4 students, the cost / benefits and readiness of 201.

(Pre-Covid) Device Deployment at K-4s.

Units assigned to each classroom (generally 5 per room) and shared cart model for checkout. Carts are generally kept in the hall. Kindergarten had 10 ipads per room. 1st grade has ~6 ipads per room. 2nd grade is getting consolidated to Chromebooks in classroom. There was one shared ipad cart that didn't get used heavily, except on MAP weeks.

Project Questions:

  • Is this solution a stop gap or a long term 1:1 solution?
  • Would any K-4 student be taking them home regularly? ( If 4th grade took home, wouldn't need charging carts in 4th grade).
  • Is there "digital homework" being assigned for K-4 students?
  • Do we collect loaned out K4 Chromebooks now?

Project Planning Points:

  • Currently estimating same number for Kindergarten in 20-21 as we had in 19-20, this number is highly speculative.
  • Our numbers plan on every student targeted, receiving a device whether you're in class or remote only (if that option becomes reality)

Options considered

Option 1: Do nothing: Mass loan to parents until Covid endsOption 2: K-4 1:1 ( 2-4 Chromebooks, K-1 Ipads)Option 3: Kinder Ipads, 1-4 ChromebooksOption 4: 3-4 1:1 "shared" K-2

Description

Just offer additional Chromebooks to parents who need one (or a second). Unclaimed Chromebooks could be stored in carts etc. This is most applicable if we are mostly remote.

2nd - 4th Grade Chromebooks 1:1, K-1 ipads.

1st - 4th Grade Chromebooks 1:1, Kindergarten Ipads. Go 1:1 for 3rd and 4th grade. Kindergarten through 2nd grade, would continue with a classroom set. This would be most applicable if we do some type of A/B split with half the population.

Pros and cons

(plus) Nothing to purchase

(plus) Reaches out to community for additional at home device counting

(plus) When Covid ends, then we mass collect and add carts to multiple grade levels.

(plus) No need to collect currently borrowed CBs.

(minus) In school tech would have to be cart based and check out / clean schedules updated.

(minus) Unpredictable count of devices going/staying home.

(minus) Unpredictable on how many we "Lose" from parents etc.

(minus) Students possibly still using their own devices at home - more difficult to troubleshoot

(plus) With all of our Chromebook numbers, this is very close to happening, on Chromebook side of things.

(plus) Eliminates sharing devices, having to sanitize between student use.

(plus) More inline with 1st grade teachers, ipads.

(plus) If reverts back to Remote Learning, each student has a device they can use.

(minus) 1st grade iPads? Is that the direction of Minooka 201? 1st grade media class currently teachers Chromebooks

(minus) Carts would need to be purchased

(minus) Kids who don't have devices at home would not be able to do remote learning

(minus) Would need better/premium iPad management system

(plus) Aligns more closely to Media class teachers and curriculum on Chromebooks for 1st grade

(plus) Could shift existing 1st grade iPads into Kindergarten to reduce iPad capital cost?

(plus) Puts 201 on a path to purchase a grade level of Chromebooks per year, similar to 5th grade 1:1 rolls out.

(plus) Eliminates sharing devices, having to sanitize between student use.

(plus) If reverts back to Remote Learning, each student has a device they can use.

(minus) 1st grade teachers would need significant PD to actually utilize Chromebooks, since most are used to having ~5 iPads.

(minus) Chromebook back orders. New units may not come in until October.

(minus) Carts would need to be purchased

(minus) Kids who don't have devices at home would not be able to do remote learning

(plus) Targets 3rd and 4th grade as our heavy tech users.

(plus) Low cost

(minus) Media Class cleaning stress would be real.

(minus) Classroom devices would need to be sanitized between A/B days. (Supplies, labor)

(minus) Carts would need to be purchased

(minus) Kids who don't have devices at home would not be able to do remote learning

Procurement delays: May not have new devices until mid-September +

Plan depends on getting ~500 loaned out Chromebooks back, in working order.

Shared device cleaning is a real thing, politically and logistically.

Deployment Methods:

Ipad Deployment?  Who gets what?

  • We need to wipe every summer regardless (old apps etc etc)
  • Leaning towards stay assigned to classroom, kids don't travel with it
  • Kindergarten gets the new ones, all classroom ipads go to 1st grade

Chromebook Deployment: Who gets what?

  • 3rd and 4th assigned in summer
  • 2nd grade pile is used for remote learning first, then put into classrooms?
  • No cases for opt in remote learning
  •  Need to talk to principals regarding cases

Data Collected

Survey Sent out on how interested teachers are in Chromebook 1:1 to all K-4 teachers.

Summary: 2nd grade - 4th grade, ~80 % of teachers are in favor of Chromebook 1:1.  Kindergarten & 1st grade, only ~65% of surveyed were in favor of Chromebook 1:1. Reading through comments, we might have more success with K-1 if the question were asked if they wanted iPads vs. Chromebooks.

FAQ

Q1. Your data doesn't scream K-1 Chromebook 1:1, why are you doing it?

A1. Kindergarten would be iPads if we went 1:1 at Kindergarten.  K-1 1:1 would require more PD and the question asked was regarding Chromebooks. An analysis of current need and future Minooka needs to be done regarding 1st grade devices.

Q2: In your projected costs, how come you don't include classroom carts?

A2: Currently asking other school districts for free or discounted carts. Might have a line on 12 free carts so far.

Media Class Collaboration:

If we went with option #2, (K-1 Ipads, 2-4 Chromebooks):

  • Media class would probably have to teach Ipads to Kindergarten, and then 1st grade would be CBs (introduction) so they are primed for 2nd grade.

If we went with option #3, (K Ipads, 1-4 Chromebooks):

  • Media class teaches K-4 on Chromebooks, so 1st graders should have a basic understanding of CB usage already.  They would teach on CBs for Kindergarten to prep them for CBs in 1st grade 1:1.
