Google Screen Recording

What is Google Screen Recording? It is a feature on Chromebook that lets you select an area you’d like to record, you can also choose to use a webcam as well if you’d like as well. Afterwards it gets saved as a .webm file in the downloads folder by default. Now that we have a quick summary lets explain how to get started with Google Screen Recording.

Step 1.

To bring up the option of recording your video you will first press down on the ctrl+shift+window change key. See picture below as an example of the buttons to press.

Step 2.

After you pressed the following combination you will get a little bar that pops up above your taskbar. When the bar pops up by default it will opt to only be a screenshot instead of a video. To make it record your screen you will select the little video option next to the little camera button. When you select the video icon you will then choose the first option to the right of the camera to record your entire screen. If you wanted to record only a partial segment of your screen you can choose the middle option, and drag a section to record. You can also record only a certain tab as well by choosing the third option, if you are get confused you can also hover over the icons and they will say what they are. If you selected the right options you should have a screen similar to this image down below. Note the icons surrounded by red are the recommended options for screen recording.

Step 3.

Now that you selected how you will record your screen we can enable to webcam, and make sure the microphone is also enabled. By default it will opt to have the webcam/microphone off so we can go into the settings tab. If you click the cog it will bring up a selection of options above your bar feature audio input, camera, show clicks and keys, and save to. I recommend just only looking at Audio Input, and Camera as save to will opt into downloads by default. For Audio Input you will want to choose microphone, unless you want to hear the audio from their computer as well if they have a video in the middle of a presentation they’re doing, if that’s the case use Device audio and microphone. For Camera you want to choose Front Camera, you may also drag the camera to any of the four corners, or even click on it to make it take up less space on the screen. For Save To I recommend changing it to your Google Drive, to do that you can click Select Folder, and navigate so your Google Drive is highlighted. Once it’s highlighted by blue, you may click open which will default it’s download path straight to your drive!

 

Step 4.

Once you click on the screen you will receive a 3 seconds countdown before it starts. Once it starts the only way to end the recording is to click on the red stop button near the taskbar. See picture below for where it can be located. (If you are in slideshow mode on google slides your taskbar will not appear, you can press esc to exit slideshow mode, or you can press the windows key again to force the taskbar to appear.) Reference, the windows key is the block with two lines next to it, one of the buttons you press to initiate screen recording.

Step 5. < You may skip this step if you chose Google drive as your selected folder for saving.

Congratulations you’ve finished your video! If you’re trying to locate where it got saved by default you can navigate to your launcher in the bottom left, select the files option, and navigate to your downloads folder. From there you can upload your video to google drive and share it easily.
